Stratford Herald – 4th August 2011

Virtuoso Violin Festival- reported in the Stratford Herald on the 4th August 2011

All geared up!

The four soloists in Sundays concert rehearsing

Another good day in Stratford yesterday.  It might have rained but it didn’t stop everyone working hard and playing hard and Rimma was heard to say that life in Stratford at the moment was ‘crazy but exciting!’.  Last night there was a party at Rimma’s home and students from France, Russia, Sweden and the UK enjoyed the entertainment which included the ever popular ‘ping-pong‘!

Festival Update!

Rimma Sushanskaya and Savely Shalman, Course Professors

Everyone is working very hard at the Virtuoso Violin Festival with individual sessions with the professors in the morning and an orchestra rehearsal each afternoon/evening.

It is lovely to walk around and listen to the music, and it gives you more than just a hint that the forthcoming concerts on Saturday (6th) and Monday (8th) are going to be exciting and most enjoyable.

There is plenty of time for students to fit in sight seeing and shopping in the lovely Stratford-upon-Avon and we are keeping our fingers crossed that the rain is here for only one day and the sun will return soon.

Rehearsing

Fantastic opening concert!

Rimma Sushanskaya, Robert Markham and Steve CollissonThe Virtuoso Violin Festival was opened on Sunday evening with a recital by Rimma Sushanskaya in Stratford-upon-Avon.  The concert commenced with some lovely Bach and Paganini solo pieces, performed by Rimma Sushanskaya which was a great beginning to this, the 10th Bach and Paganini Festival.  During the second half, Rimma was joined by Robert Markham (piano) and Steve Collisson (cello) who played the Four Seasons of Buenos Aires by Piazzolla and as an encore played La muerte del angel, also by Piazzolla.  A very enjoyable evening!

P.S.   ……. just found an interesting photo which was taken after my conducting debut in Berlin on the 25th December 2008 (yes it was Christmas day!).

Guy Braunstein (shown in this picture on the left)  is the  1st Concertmeister of the Berlin Philharmonic.  He was the soloist in the Beethoven Violin Concerto.

A look at the past

When updating the website we looked for more photographs of Rimma and found this lovely one in Czechoslovakia which was in a local newspaper .  At this time Rimma was touring the

country after winning First Prize in Prague.  On the tour she performed four violin concertos composed by Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Glazounov and Bach, and was accompanied by different orchestras.  In addition, Rimma performed solo recitals .

This photo was taken after a very successful concert in Pisek,  a town famous because of Otakar Szevchik who was one of founders of violin school in Czechoslovakia in early 20th Century.  Rimma has very fond memories of this  concert.

The second photo (below) was taken in New York by the organist Michael Lieberman during her first years in the USA in the 1980′s when she was re-establishing her career again after leaving the USSR.
